Deploying a hosted Patchworks MCP server for the first time
Introduction
Irrespective of which AI assistant you intend to use, the MCP server must be deployed before a connection can be made.
The hosted Patchworks MCP server includes a set of default tools that are ready to use. You can't change these, but if required, you can add your own tools (see Customising tools for your hosted Patchworks MCP server). For now, we are focusing on an initial deployment with default tools.
Need to know
There is only ever one
deployedMCP server; this is used for all AI assistants. When you create an MCP server for the first time, it is saved and deployed with default tools. Thereafter, you can create, customise, and deploy your own version of the MCP server.
The steps
To deploy an MCP server for the first time, follow the steps below.
Access MCP servers
Select the settings option (at the bottom of the navigation menu):

Then select the MCP servers option:

The MCP servers page is displayed, with four key areas to note:

These are:
a
Current usage, followed by the MCP server URL.
Your usage allowance refers to the number of MCP hits allowed. This is not related to your AI usage, which is determined by the subscription associated with your AI assistant. The MCP server URL is the current Patchworks URL for our hosted server.
b
The create MCP server option is used to add a new server instance with default tools (see next step).
c
Summary configuration instructions for AI assistants.
More information will be available once you deploy and start working with MCP server versions.

Here you'll see the new deployment. For example:

You've now deployed the hosted Patchworks MCP server with default tools - this is all you need to connect an AI assistant.
Before switching to your AI assistant, you can run the tools here. Testing here will produce the same results as running from a connected AI assistant.
In due course, you may wish to add your own tools. In this case, you'll return to this page and use versioning options to create, save, and deploy your updates. For more information, please see Customising tools for your hosted Patchworks MCP server.
